George Russell produced a stunning lap to take pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, strengthening his case for a Mercedes contract extension. The Briton outpaced Max Verstappen by almost two-tenths of a second at Marina Bay, with the world champion left frustrated after accusing Lando Norris of costing him a chance at pole.
Verstappen claimed he lost downforce when he caught the McLaren driver returning to the pits on his final lap, gesturing angrily in the cockpit. “You need every bit of clean air on a Q3 lap, and I lost downforce there. It will be remembered,” said Verstappen. Norris dismissed the complaint, saying: “They always complain, that’s Red Bull. I didn’t even know – I was three seconds ahead.”
Whether Verstappen could have matched Russell’s pace is debatable. The Dutchman had been off the Briton’s times on his earlier run, while Russell delivered two near-perfect laps, the second improving by seven-thousandths despite heavy pressure. Mercedes’ recent front wing upgrade appears to be paying off, and Russell’s performance was even more impressive given he is still recovering from illness.
Behind them, Oscar Piastri secured third for McLaren with Norris fifth, while Kimi Antonelli impressed with fourth in the second Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will line up sixth and seventh. Both Williams cars were disqualified post-session for DRS infringements, pushing Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz to the back.
McLaren can wrap up the constructors’ title in Singapore with just 13 points, while Russell and Verstappen’s battle at the front promises a fiery opening into turn one. Russell, still chasing his first Singapore victory, faces a determined Verstappen hoping to break his own winless streak at the circuit and close the championship gap to Piastri.
