Pep Guardiola prepares to manage his 1,000th career game when Manchester City host Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. The Spanish manager says he still struggles to grasp the scale of his achievements.
Since taking charge of Barcelona B in 2007, Guardiola has recorded 715 victories across all competitions. He has lifted 12 top-flight titles with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, and won three Champions League trophies. The 54-year-old has suffered only 128 defeats and collected another 14 cup victories.
When asked if he keeps track of his total wins, Guardiola said the numbers are astonishing. He explained he does not constantly calculate them but recognizes that the milestones show extraordinary success. He added that achieving such consistency again would be almost impossible.
record-breaking achievements at City
Guardiola transformed Manchester City into a record-setting team. He guided them to the first-ever 100-point Premier League season and to a domestic treble. He also led City to four consecutive league titles, unmatched in English football history.
He reflected on his winning percentage, which exceeds 70 percent. “Every 10 games we win seven and draw one or two. This happens because of the players and their dedication,” he said. Guardiola stressed that his own passion, preparation, and attention to detail are key to success. He thrives on analyzing opponents and ensuring his players follow his plans fully.
When asked about being called the greatest manager of all time, Guardiola smiled and agreed. He credited football history and his teams’ performances but said he never started managing to become the best.
Liverpool remains the ultimate rival
Guardiola entered the League Managers Association hall of fame to mark his milestone. Sir Alex Ferguson praised his longevity, calling the achievement extraordinary.
On Sunday, City face Liverpool, Guardiola’s biggest rival in England. He said the rivalry has pushed both teams to excel. “If I had to choose a rival for this milestone, it would be them,” he said, highlighting the intensity and respect in the competition.
Liverpool, along with Tottenham, represents the club Guardiola has lost to most often. He praised Jurgen Klopp, the manager he has faced most frequently and who defeated him the most. “Jurgen and Liverpool have been the biggest rival in this country. I have enjoyed every moment,” he said, adding that Klopp pushed him to improve and shaped his approach to football.
