Tesla Sees Sharp Drop
Tesla’s European sales fell significantly in July, with registrations down 40% compared with the same month last year. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reported 8,837 Tesla vehicles registered across the EU, the UK, and the European Free Trade Association, down from 14,769 in July 2024. Despite updates to the Model Y, Tesla continues to face growing competition.
BYD Experiences Rapid Growth
BYD saw registrations climb to 13,503 last month, more than tripling the 4,151 units recorded a year earlier. Its market share rose to 1.2%, overtaking Tesla’s 0.8%. With competitively priced models and aggressive expansion across Europe, BYD overtook Tesla in regional sales for the first time earlier this year, according to JATO Dynamics.
UK Incentives and Broader Market Trends
The UK government has introduced new subsidies to encourage electric vehicle adoption. Ford will be the first company to benefit from the full £3,750 grant on two models, while 26 other vehicles qualify for £1,500. Discounts apply only to cars priced under £37,000 and are applied automatically at the point of sale. Meanwhile, UK car production rose 5.6% in July, marking the second month of consecutive growth. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders noted that the market still faces challenges from weak consumer confidence and fluctuating trade conditions. Across Europe, 1.011 million battery-electric vehicles were registered in the first seven months of 2025, making up 15.6% of new car sales, while hybrid vehicles continued to lead with 2.255 million units, driven by strong growth in France, Spain, Germany, and Italy.
