In a rain-soaked, chaotic Basque derby, Jon Gorrotxategi’s stoppage-time goal gave Real Sociedad a 3–2 win over Athletic Club, sealing one of the most dramatic victories in the rivalry’s history.
The 22-year-old academy product, playing his first derby, scored after his initial scuffed attempt fell kindly back to him inside the six-yard box, smashing the rebound into the net to send the Reale Arena into delirium. It was the first time in 178 meetings that the derby had been decided in added time.
Earlier, Ander Barrenetxea, injured moments before, had hobbled back on to set up Brais Méndez for the opener with his only touch. Gorka Guruzeta equalised for Athletic before Gonçalo Guedes restored Sociedad’s lead with a fine strike. A scrappy finish from Robert Navarro levelled again for the visitors with 11 minutes left, setting up the frantic finale.
For Sociedad, who had won only once in nine league games, the result felt transformative. “I hit it with my soul,” said Gorrotxategi. “This goal is for the fans — we’re in a different dynamic now.”
After the whistle, players and supporters sang together in the pouring rain — fitting for a derby full of passion, grit and catharsis.
